Hidden Victims of Domestic Abuse |

“Children are undoubtedly the hidden victims of domestic abuse because in nine out of ten cases they are involved in some way.” That’s the shocking statement from Dudley Council’s domestic abuse co-ordinator Anne Boden.

Dudley Council in conjunction with safe & sound, Dudley Safeguarding Children Board and Dudley Safeguarding Adults Board has launched a new campaign to encourage people to tell the local authority or the police if they are concerned about someone. The campaign has been created in light of recent high profile cases such as baby Peter, Khyra Ishaq and Victoria Climbié.
Vulnerable people, including children, living with domestic abuse can often become invisible and suffer in silence. Children are often described as the 'forgotten victims' of domestic abuse.
National statistics show children are in the same or the next room in 90 per cent of incidents.
A series of posters, leaflets and window adverts will be displayed around the borough throughout December and the coming months. Messages will also be issued by Bluetooth when people pass the shop windows in which the adverts are placed to reinforce the message.
This campaign hopes to encourage reporting which will in-turn help reduce the number of repeat victims. If you suspect someone is being harmed or neglected or is living with domestic abuse call the police domestic abuse unit on 0121 626 8078, the national domestic abuse helpline on 08082 000247 for help or in an emergency situation dial 999.
